Quiet Criticality


That subtitle is a borrowed word, and I mean both halves of it.

In a reactor, criticality is not the emergency people assume it is. It is the balance point — the reaction sustaining itself, steady and self-correcting, neither running away nor dying out. Everything upstream of that state exists to make it uneventful. I spent three decades in the work that keeps it that way.

The other half is what I am after now. Going critical, in God's plan for my life — growing up into what He has already said is true about me, knowing His love and who I am in Christ, until it stops being effort and becomes the thing that sustains. Wisdom and understanding are not a burst. They accumulate quietly, channel by channel, until the whole thing holds.

That is the standard I am trying to write to, on both subjects.

What I am actually doing

Study

I am enrolled in the one-year hybrid programme at Charis Bible College in Toronto. Alongside it I write chapter-by-chapter study notes — 1,189 of them so far — working through the text from a New Covenant, grace position.

The interest is not novelty. It is wanting to know what is actually there, rather than what I was handed second-hand.

Agentic AI

I build and live inside a genuinely agentic system — not a chatbot. A working second brain that tracks tasks, project state, documentation and follow-through across dozens of active threads, self-hosted on my own infrastructure: a Proxmox cluster, a K3s cluster, TrueNAS, the whole stack.

It runs every day. What I write about it comes from operating it, not from reading about it.


The work

Thirty-two years, one station

I started on the tools at Darlington in 1990 as a construction electrician and retired from it in July 2026 — thirty-two years on-site, not counting the stretch back at school. In between: an apprenticeship, two diplomas, an engineering degree, a P.Eng, and most of the disciplines a nuclear project touches. I never lost the plant-floor instinct that comes from having built the systems I later designed and analysed.

  1. 2025 — 2026

    Owners Engineering — BWRX-300 SMR Unit 1 Grid Interconnection

    OPG · Darlington Nuclear

    • Joined the Owners Engineering group for OPG's new BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor project on Unit 1, following the Darlington Refurbishment.
    • Oversaw interconnection of Unit 1 to the Ontario grid, coordinating directly with Hydro One and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
    • Carried this work through to retirement on July 31, 2026.
  2. 2017 — 2025

    Work Control Team Lead — Refurbishment

    OPG · Darlington Nuclear (DNRU1 / DNRU2 / DNRU4)

    • Planned, scheduled and coordinated cyclical preventative maintenance and refurbishment execution across Darlington Units 1, 2 and 4.
    • ROMS single point of contact — coordinating with Hydro One and Energy Markets on work affecting the Ontario grid and station ring bus.
    • Conceived and built the Battery Capacity Testing Coordination Team and its tracking system from nothing.
    • Held scheduling oversight across 17 concurrent projects alongside my own work programs — resolving resource, space, division-separation and reactor-safety conflicts during execution.
  3. 2014 — 2017 · 2006 — 2007

    Reactor Safety, Thermal Hydraulics & Analysis

    OPG · Darlington Nuclear

    • Performed analysis supporting station alignment changes, ensuring unanalysed harsh conditions could not occur outside the Safety Analysis.
    • Developed the Heat Sink system and recall-time calculation methodology for Unit 0 common systems, where none previously existed.
    • Wrote code to replace an arduous manual ESW recall-time calculation — iterating HTS states, steam generator volume and outage days to identify boiling and dry-out points.
    • Authored Safe Operating Envelope documentation supporting CNSC regulatory review.
  4. 2007 — 2014

    Shift Supervisor in Training — Authorization Training Program

    OPG · Darlington Nuclear

    • Completed the full authorization pathway: general science fundamentals, unit and common systems training, and the Nuclear Safety Course.
    • Simulator-based operations training as ANO/CRO against OP&Ps, ROPs and OMs.
    • Shift Advisor Technical and Emergency Shift Assist — CNSC and CANALERT notification, logging and minimum-complement accounting during emergency response.
    • Manager Ready Assessment (DDI, 2012): Exceptional (5/5) in Coaching for Success and Influencing; Strong (4/5) across Managing Relationships, Problem Analysis, Judgement, and Planning & Organizing.
  5. 1999 — 2006

    Electrical Design Engineer / Design Team Lead, P.Eng

    OPG · Darlington Nuclear

    • Designed and reviewed electrical structures, systems and components against CNSC, CSA and international nuclear codes.
    • Applied defence-in-depth and divisional separation philosophy in support of the Safety Analysis.
    • Directed contract engineering — technical specifications, vendor procurement, facility visits, and sign-off on vendor deliverables.
    • Supported the Environmental Qualification programme, ensuring safety-related equipment performs under post-accident conditions across its qualified life.
  6. 2000 — 2006

    Instructor — Apprenticeship Pre-Exam Course

    • Taught the 60-hour Certificate of Qualification exam preparation course for Construction Maintenance Electricians.
  7. 1990 — 1995

    Construction Maintenance Electrician

    Ontario Hydro / OPG · Darlington Nuclear

    • Built and installed electrical systems for Darlington Units 3 and 4 to Nuclear Safety Assessment requirements.
    • Completed all five terms of the Construction Maintenance Apprenticeship Programme — 1,700 hours each. Certified 1994, with PLC and electronic control endorsement.
    • Ran a small computer-networking consultancy alongside the apprenticeship — the first thread of an interest that never went away.
